West Ealing is a London Borough of Ealing district located about three-quarters of a mile (1.2 km) west of Ealing Broadway. The district has a lengthy history of habitation, although its current shape dates from less than a century ago. Steven's Town was eventually named after the area around Drayton Green Lane, which contained around forty homes.Much of the area between Uxbridge Road south to Windmill Road, east to Northfield Avenue, and west to Boston Road had market gardens and orchards throughout the nineteenth century. At the eastern edge of these market gardens and orchards were allotments going back to the Poor Relief Act of 1832, when the bishop of London gave the territory known as Ealing Dean Common (both sides of Northfield Avenue) to West Ealing's poor. The allotments on Northfield Avenue's east side are original, whereas those on the west side were built in the early 1980s.In the 1800s, Ealing Dean's main claim to fame was its pony and donkey races. These races on Jackass Common (now Dean Gardens) came to an end in 1880 when the local government outlawed them on moral grounds. The Ealing Lawn Tennis Club was established in 1882 on property between St. Leonards Road and the Great Western Railway (GWR).
