In the early nineteenth century, R.W.Walker of Michelgrove sought to establish a coach service from Littlehampton to London that would compete with the commercial route via Arundel by building a private turnpike road over the dry riverbed.A road extending from the Chichester-Brighton road to Storrington comprised nearly the whole western boundary of Clapham parish and is thus possibly ancient. Another north-south route, classified as a public carriage road in 1812, stretched via Holt to Findon. Within the parish, two paths linked Clapham and Holt, one of which was a footpath in 1974 and the other, which was documented in 1415, going from Clapham church along the south side of the contemporary Clapham Woods.
