In his 'History of Kensington', Faulkner describes this house as follows: 'Over the mantelpiece there is a recess, formed by the curve of the chimney, where it is said that the Protector used to conceal himself when he visited this house; but why his Highness chose this place for concealment tradition has not condescended to inform us'. The wainscot conceals this recess, which is still used as a pantry."In her book "Pilgrimages to English Shrines," Mr. H. G. Davis writes, "Upon closer investigation, how grieved we have been to discover the truth." … We discovered that Oliver never lived there, but his son Richard did and was a ratepayer in the parish of Kensington at one point." Even this latter claim is called into question, since Dr. Rimbault writes in Notes and Queries that "the house was known as Hale House in 1596, when a rentcharge of 20s. per annum was laid upon it for the poor of Kensington parish." It was acquired in 1630 by William Methwold, Esq., one of Sir William Blake's executors, who died that year. This nobleman appears to have occupied the building continuously until his death in 1652. In his will, he mentions Hale House.The Lawrences of Shurdington, Gloucestershire, appear to have lived at Hale House in 1668. It was occupied by Francis Lord Howard of Effingham in 1682, and the birth of his son is thus recorded in the parish registers: "July 7, 1682. The Hon'ble Thomas Howard, son of the Rt Honourable Francis, Ld Howard, Baron of Effingham, and the Lady Philadelphia, was born at Hale House, in this parish." Hale House was still owned by the Methwold family, who sold it in 1754 to John Fleming, Esq., who was later named a baronet; and in 1790 it was owned jointly by the Earl of Harrington and Sir Richard Worsley, Bart., who married his daughters and co-heirs.
