Abbey Wood is a neighborhood in southeast London, England, that lies between the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the London Borough of Bexley. Abbey Wood is named after the destroyed Lesnes Abbey, which is located on high land south of town. In 1849, the Abbey Wood railway station opened, and the village comprised a dozen or so dwellings and two pubs, the Abbey Arms and the Harrow Inn. The Harrow Inn was the site of a nightly migration as drinkers made their way to the Abbey Arms.Abbey Wood, a projected cemetery for east London by Edwin Chadwick during a burial crisis, was abandoned in 1852. Between 1900 and 1930, the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society (RACS) created the Bostall Estate, which was formerly known as "Tin Check Island" after the Society's dividend system. The estate was initially used to rehouse residents from Dockhead and Peckham, then London's East End, with Eynsham Drive serving as the major thoroughfare.In the mid-1960s, the Greater London Council commenced construction on more ex-Royal Arsenal land north-east of Abbey Wood station.
