What is now known as London Gatwick Airport first opened its doors in 1931 as a private facility controlled by Home Counties Aviation Services. After some serious construction was done, the initial terminal together with the taxiways and aprons was opened in 1936. Travelers arriving by train would use covered walkways and subways to enter the airport. Gatwick Airport was initially a Royal Air Force airfield during World War II that was later enlarged through the purchase of a nearby racetrack. When it came to civic use in 1946, it was still largely grassland.
The South and North Terminals were inaugurated as Gatwick became recognized as a major international airport and the second busiest in Britain. Gatwick Airport expansion is still being studied, despite the vocal resistance from locals and environmentalists. Options include adding a third terminal or a second runway to the south of the current one, enabling the airport to handle more travelers than Heathrow does at the moment.
